d. List two thing the judges liked- they liked some of the backgrounds and scenery in some of the photos, and there were some photos that really stood out to them, like the man with the shovel.
e. What is your overall impression of the photographer? What did you like or not like? I agreed with the judges that some of them were unemotional and boring, but i also really liked a couple of them, like the woman in a wedding dress with the dark skies behind her.
2. a. Name of Photographer- Nick Adams
b. General Focus of Portfolio- people, stories, sports
c. List three problems that the judges noted about the portfolio- they said that if you have to read the caption of a photo then its not working, they said that the photographer cut off a guys head to much, and they said the photos were poorly framed.
d. List two things the judges liked- they said it took a strong person to take these photos, they also liked the way the colors stood out in some photos
e. What is your overall impression of the photographer? What did you like or not like? The first photo in the portfolio shocked me, as did others. I liked the photos that had really good focus, and most of them were really great.
3. a. Name of Photographer- Jordan Murph
b. General Focus of Portfolio- sports and stories
c. List three problems that the judges noted about the portfolio- they felt as if some of the stories were staged, they wanted him to get more real action, and his photos didn't have that much to do with his story and there needed to be more details.
d. List two things the judges liked- they really liked the composition of his photos, and there was good lighting and good moments captured in some of the photos
e. What is your overall impression of the photographer? What did you like or not like?
I feel that if he hadn't done the sorties, it would have been a lot better. I liked the photos in the beginning and they were strong, but then they just started getting boring and just wrong.
4. Winner- Dustin Snipes
a. What did the judges note as strengths as they were critiquing it? They liked the composition of the photos, the moments that were captured, and the angles the photos were taken from.
b. What do you see as strengths? Do you see any weaknesses? I agree with the judges and totally understand why they chose this as the winner. I don't see any weaknesses, and i love every single photo in the portfolio. I especially like the photo with the swimmer touching his goggles and the water droplets separating the camera and him. You could see his face in the droplets too, and i want to know how the photographer was able to take this shot.
5. Contest Recap
Briefly describe the process the judges went through in deciding the winner.
They went through the portfolios they thought had potential. Then they make a pro and con list of the ones they have. They chose some that have photos that they don't like.
Part 2
6. Describe one photo that you agreed with the judges on. Explain why you and the judges do or do not like it. I agree with what the judges say about part 2 because it has a lot going on and I didn't understand what i needed to focus on.
Describe one photo that you do NOT agree with the judges on. Explain why you think the judges are wrong. I don't agree with the judges on the photo of the year. I believe the no pro/no college should definitely have won. It had a lot of emotion and action and really captured the right moment in my opinion. The others didn't really match up to it.
